Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service provides unique mix of volunteer surf lifeguards and surf sports athletes. It started in 1929 with a few young adventurers, some wooden planks and a surf reel and line rescue…. for more than 75 years the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service has been a loyal part of the Tauranga City Community. Initially, as the Mount Maunganui members of the Royal Life Saving Service, the association of volunteers patrolled the ocean beaches over the peak holiday periods. They operated from a prefab hut, appropriated from the east coast railway, close to the site that the Lifeguard Service occupies today. When a veranda was added to the hut it became the control centre for rescue patrols and adventures in early wooden surfboard building. The wreck of the fishing launch ‘Ranui’ in the harbour entrance 28th December 1950, resulted in the loss of 22 lives. This created the rationale to expand the Surf Lifesaving Service. The dedication of club members in assisting in the grim task of body recovery was international news that cemented the partnership between the ?club? and the professional civic services of the Tauranga City.

Al fresco and covered dining available As a country that is now known internationally for the crafting of top quality wines, it comes as a surprise that before 1980 New Zealand didn?t produce a commercially available bubbly of its own. With a world-class reputation in winemaking to live up to, there were great expectations when a little over 30 years ago we began to produce a sparkling wine. It started small, but we were dedicated to excellence right from the outset. A mere 20,000 cases of sparkling wine came from the 1980 harvest of Gisborne and Hawke?s Bay grapes. It was an effervescent, Kiwi twist on Champagne, released before Christmas 1981, just in time for a celebratory summer toast. Since then, Lindauer?s international awards and critical acclaim have made it our most loved sparkling wine.

Pleasing indoor/outdoor flow in vineyard setting The brand name Coney has special traction in New Zealand and Australia due to the public affection for younger cricketing brother Jeremy who captained New Zealand in the early eighties and continues to commentate on radio, SKY TV and the BBC. Our logo, the treble clef, with grape bunch delicately appended, comes from the family?s love of music ? it is also a nice metaphor for the harmony experienced in a lovely wine. Headphones are mandatory in the vineyard, and many a passing local has marvelled at the gangly Coney legs in gyration to an Eagles, LRB or Beatles number. Scientific tests also confirm that grapes respond positively to a diet of 1970?s music!! The wines themselves have harmonious names ? Rallentando, Ragtime, Ramblin? Rose and Pizzicato. These three have now been joined by tiny quantities of Piccolo Pinot Gris and Que Sera Syrah. For the unitiated, an explanation of these terms can be obtained from the man behind the tasting bar. Visiting groups have sometimes been startled to hear Coney burst into spontaneous song to illustrate their meaning. This service attracts no additional fee.
